Upon leaving Paris 1989

In Africa for graduating with Honda France

Seeing scroll on the video images of the Paris-Dakar, by reading the reports in the newspapers, following live maybe some phase, I wonder how much they were: «At least once I do it too». For many, it is only an emotional reaction, others go beyond, but stop discouraged from a cost estimate too often exceeding expectations and possibilities. Is to belong to this second group that approached Herve Guio, marketing director of Honda France, with the initiative «Africa Twin Goal Dakar».

What it is is easily understood: offer fifty riders the opportunity to participate in the Paris-Dakar rally by buying cheap an Africa Twin complies with the rules by category «marathon», to receive a free preparation stage, a minimum of care and a spare parts service. The initiative responded 400 aspiring «dakariani», 150 of which tone was admitted to a screening test. Implacable judge, how impartial, was Marc Morales, the team's official rider Honda France.

Of the fifty is also an Italian boy, born in Enna 31 years ago and emigrated to Switzerland with his parents at the age of ten. It's called Paolo Di Mauro, He lives in the Canton of Renens, near Lausanne, where he runs a dealership Honda and runs regularly in Swiss enduro championship held in France for the veto of Switzerland hard at motorcycle racing. The first African experience made her last October at the Rally of the Pharaohs where he ranked 23rd with an Africa Twin.

"When they called to participate in the selection explains Paolo, committed to cleaning the air filter sand — I replied that I was, trip to Egypt. They told me to make me feel back to tell how it went. I finished the race and now here».

Very close to that of the twin-cylinder series 650 Africa Twin presents the only changes allowed by category «marathon».

«The autonomy was adeguala at distances — explains Paul — with adoption of a main tank from 40 liters to which you add the rear by 17 liters. You have changed the engine guard plate, now stronger and even suspensions have been adapted for use in racing».
The bike was not delivered to buyers in race set.
"We were not given the serial model, with conversion kit which includes the compass, the trip master, the portaroad-book. In short everything you need at the price of 80.500 French francs (about 18 millions of lire) in which is included the complete clothing: helmet, suit, boots and gloves. There is also the possibility of hiring a personal mechanic, by adding 53.000 Franks (about 11 millions) but more than half of the participants preferred to do without it for their expenditure, Since the cost of the bike must be added the entry fee to the 11 millions. A little’ We give so much support anyway and we also carry for free 10 pounds and 200 grams of baggage apiece. It is important because we know to find the finish line a tent in which to sleep and a spare sweater».

Paul asked for a judgment on the Africa Twin in trim already used to. «Damn healed weighs — was her prompt response — 270 pounds in running trim. If you fall you can no longer get her up…».

My Dakar by Ermanno Ban

After 13 motocross years pursuing a dream that even came close several times, I've never been able to make it my profession, I thought I would close at least in beauty this interlude of life.

In those years the Paris Dakar held the world attached to television, to newspapers and magazines. And then I thought it was the right race, a dream very tempting, so it become a pleasant obsession by participating in 3 editions, from 1989 at 1991.

Already, but with what money, by what means!?
I remind you that I've always been a worker and cover the 50 millions need has always been an ordeal ... I had one Yamaha XT Ténéré and it was my first bike that took me to the finish 49° on 60 riders arrived at the finish line.
The prepared in my usual cellar 4×3 Mt (who says you need mega workshops are wrong) and just for the tanks I asked help from VRP. The engine was "fresh" only had 18.000 km so I replaced the piston and cylinder covered by “warranty” my friend's pirate dealer. I remember the day I fell and racked up 2 the trip master, so I drove without notes until the end, I followed the tracks, dust and my gut. Just following the traces left in the sand by pilots as Franco Picco and Edi Orioli, I managed to finish, Therefore they deserve in their merit and my highest consideration, Perhaps the strongest riders I've ever met at Dakar.

All would have ended up there after the first edition, having reached my goal, but when the sponsors come knocking at your door and down the street they stop you and ask you for an autograph you realise you can't stop this beautiful dream.
In Dakar 1990 I already had a sale with Crossbowmen to rent one of his Aprilia, then at the last moment everything fell through and my choice fell on an Africa Twin which gave me Boano. The bike was already prepared by HRC with just the instrumentation, the tires and a few other things.

Unfortunately it was not a lucky, a major accident at 4° or 5° round, I don't really remember, compelled me to finish the race in advance (I was on the border between Libya and Niger and cease them my memories, because I woke up in the recovery room at Maggiore in Bologna after 5 days).

For my last Dakar, that of 1991, USAI always an Africa Twin Honda Italy made available to me. Had already been used at the Rally of the Pharaohs, However was in order. Unfortunately that Edition ended too soon, the fuel pump stopped working on the border with Niger (still there, what luck!) and only thanks to a small group of retired pilots, After 3 days we walked up to Tunis where he embarked for Italy.

The bike that definitely gave me more satisfaction and I remember with most pleasure was definitely my first Yamaha, It was the lightest is the most manageable, but he had some limits. Unlike the twin-cylinder Honda, If you want heavier but significantly more in a competition similar.

At this point, What's left of my Africa? I think I've given so much of myself in this race, though it cannot be eternal, I maintain friendships with a few dakariani.
Unfortunately I think the technology has debased the adventure and the political problems did the rest, of old Dakar remained very little. Though it's part of me and I follow with pleasure every time traveling.

A curious anecdote, is when well aware of the importance of physical recovery, of eating and sleeping, to get used to sleeping at low temperatures, problems I encountered in the North to start race, preparing sleeping outside in sleeping bags throughout December!!

Finished my dream I chose another path in sports "much less challenging" he left time to my private life and without giving importance to the competitive side, now to 55 years, a daughter, a classmate and my new passion is triathlon.

Hello everyone.

Signorelli-1989-1

Angel face ready for Dakar 1989

He dreamed of making the skier, Instead it has become a famous enduro champion who will seek glory and fame in the Paris-Dakar, While it is true that before him other enduro riders have conquered the capital of Senegal a place on the podium. Meanwhile Angelo Signorelli, This year, you are satisfied to win the European Championship, then the six days enduro, always with KTM 125, and is still fighting to win the Italian title.

At the races came in the footsteps of his uncle Joseph as the champion now established and pilot Officer introduced him very young to Fantic Motor, to work as a tester. Little by little, Angelo became pilot-test driver, and end up doing only the pilot thanks to successes in small displacements. Afoot by the withdrawal of Fantic and age of military service, Signorelli becomes part of the Fiamme Oro passing in 1982 the Kramit and later, from 84, the KTM-Faison. Always available at the interview and on a charge of sympathy not indifferent, Signorelli is referred to by many as the Playboy of the enduro, Since away from racing, But even on the race, It is not uncommon to see him in the company of lovely fans, After appearing in some advertising pages of the KTM a few years ago with a beautiful Oriental girl in his arms. Bachelor and inveterate Heartthrob, Signorelli is however unquestionably a very serious professional and a real «Professor» di tecnica in trials and in the development of every detail of the bike, as well as natural talent indisputable.
The friendly character and the great will to succeed, typical of the people of Bergamo, They then made it possible to achieve all the goals it has set itself from time to time, becoming first champion in small 50 CC, then in 80, then again in 125. Now who will run the Paris-Dakar race with Yamaha Chesterfield Scout Team may also acquire that experience which already partially owns to emerge even on long African raid.

"I'm under no illusions» says Signorelli "the Dakar is for me a new race and although I am new to running of Lina in the desert, I still need a lot of experience».

– But what led you to accept a three-year contract with the Yamaha Belgarda?
"Last year I had run the RaIly of Pharaohs with Belgarda and certainly I had made a good impression before the accident that cost me a fractured clavicle and a hand when I was among the first. Towards the month of July I was again contacted by popes who offered me a program determined mind interesting. I talked to Faisal and after long meditated on the decision I chose, Although reluctantly for the whole environment KTM to which I was bound for 5 years, to sign a three-year contract with the Belgarda. My next programme includes participation in the most important rally that will take part in the Team and the various Championships of enduro where should I run or in 250 with a new bike or in 125, or in 350 4 T».

– As they took the KTM this your decision?
"Every driver always receives the proposals at the end of the season. But as often unfortunately happens the streets can be divided. I am still sure you have chosen the most stimulating program. It is not however was an easy decision because it leaves the KTM meant leaving people with there I lived for five years with a relationship that was now gone far beyond the mere fact of being a driver».

How do you think will be addressed and solved your problem to run this year's Dakar, Since the rally will start on 25 December and your contract will expire only on 31?
"I hope that everything works out for the best though I have yet to tackle the problem with Faisal which for me has always behaved in a more than correct.

How do you see placed in a team that has big ambitions of winning the Dakar?
"I know very well Marinoni. Peak a little less, even if I found myself perfectly during the last year of the Pharaohs RaIly. Little or no Neveu. I didn't however no ambition in that my focus remains to gain experiences and a good support in the role of domestique. Next year if all goes well I hope to be a little more free and who knows that in three years I can dress up as top driver».

– The 1988 has so far been a golden year for you. Did you expect it would be so?
"When at the beginning of the season, Faisal told me I had to run in 125 I was so happy because all the 1987 I had run into 500 never failed to express myself to the best of my ability. I started hard preparation in all respects intensifying even more workouts when I saw that the results were increasingly positive».

– In the environment you are loved d everyone and especially how you are one of the most popular drivers ever by girls. How do you justify this, Whereas some teams there is a high friction?

"That win or lose I always remain what they are and it is perhaps for this reason that I am nice to everyone. The story of the girls, or that I am a Playboy is absolutely not true although I don't mind dwell to speak or to learn more about the girls… Of course the most possible cute!».

– The fact of being named "wingman" of Cyril Neveu doesn't scare you a bit?
«The second to Neveu who in his career has already won five times the Dakar is a great honour for me».

– Why do you call yourself wingman when you have the chances and also the ability to not be?
"I repeat: I think I need to do much more experience than I have already to Dakar performing to the best of my job shadow of Neveu. If in a few years I became the new Oberoi…I would be obviously very happy»

The Dakar by private persons – Honda Africa Twin Marathon

Many have asked us to speak of those heroic individuals who at the end of the years ' 80 attended the Dakar on a Honda Africa Twin little more than standard. We asked Gianpaolo Banelli to www.nightwings.org to tell us something more.

In the late 80 's it was possible to run the Dakar in the category «Marathon» with motorcycles derived from the series and adapted to the race. For this reason, and also to make up in some way to the next withdrawal of official Honda Rally (After 4 victories at Dakar), on the occasion of the Edition ' 89 Honda France, through the Director Jean Louis Guillot, launched in the fall of ' 88 the operation "50 Africa Twin in Dakar". A first selection was made between 150 candidates and were chosen 50 that were given as many specimens of Africa Twin 650 particularly cured in order to run in the category «Marathon».

Meanwhile was prepared the bike, a Honda RD03 650 already near final made a fine figure at Pharaons Rally 1988 in the hands of Joel Daures (He had run the last Dakar with the NXR officer). 49 bike started then for 11a Dakar; Alsatian Heintz saw its participation cancelled a few days before departure, When bike and gear Honda France had already been purchased, because the Libyan authorities did not accept her entry into the country as belonging to the French army. Among the starters also have a young Oxford shoe, Alex Lacombe, But even an Italian (Roberto Boano) and some riders of other nationalities (Spain, England, Senegal).

The serial numbers of these 50 motorcycles were starting to 5 How about RD03 standard (Hence the need to be true experts of means to recognize the true Marathon of false and Tarot).Normally for the Dakar a number of parts of the bike were punched and numbered with the same race number of pilot, to prevent them from being used unauthorized parts, This should help. The operation had some success: 18 At concluded the race and Patrice Toussaint (16th overall) and Patrick Sireyjol (just behind him) they finished the first two places in the class Marathon, with our Roberto Boano 4° by category.

The following year, for the 12th edition of the Dakar rally, they were then set up other 50 bike, slightly different from previous series, marked by a number of different frame that starts to 6 (from 600001 in 600050). Twenty aircraft were delivered in France while others were destined for other countries, at least 3 in Spain. Only fifteen of these machines reached Italy, in mid November ' 89 and then for many too late to join the rally. At least one was driven at the last moment by Ermanno Ban (49th overall in the Dakar 89 with a Yamaha) but he ran a few steps and then run into a serious fall, that forced him to immediate hospitalization in hospital and to leave the vehicle in Libya (where was seen years ago by some tourists!).

Spanish Antonio “Toni” Boluda, he behaved very well, resulting 18th overall in Dakar ' 90 and winner of the Marathon. Asad Maher ran the Pharaohs ' 90 with one of these bikes, entrusted to him directly from Carlo Fiorani, then responsible for HRC (that is returned for a while’ After the Ferrari experience). Also very few specimens were built in ' 90 (It just seems 8) «Marathon» 750 but during the Dakar ' 91 were “clean up” in class Silhouette, because they had a single disc front brake instead of 2! Great though the provision of Boluda and Boano, respectively 10° and 11° in the absolute and behind our Luigino Medardo among the Silhouette! In Marathon Dakar still ran some 13a RD03, including the one entrusted by Fiorani to Ban, recovered from the accident the year before thanks to the care of Dr. Costa, those of our Paladins and Nassi, and another dozen, of which unfortunately only to Sireyjol came to the end.
